We always start in a larger harbor, where travelers meet, settle into their bunks, and are introduced to the basics of crewing by the skipper. There’s no need to rush upon arrival, as our schedule includes the customary “academic fifteen-minute” grace period. Before we set sail on our student yacht, we head out to stock up on provisions. “One cannot discover new oceans unless they have the courage to lose sight of the shore,” as the writer André Gide once said. Make the most of your time off and newfound freedom, so you can return to the new semester relaxed and ready. Perhaps an exchange semester or your bachelor’s exams are coming up? What should go on the travel packing list?

Anyone who has sailed before knows what belongs on a sailing trip packing list. But crewing is, of course, also meant for sailing beginners. That’s why – no matter which party destinations in Europe you have in mind – such a checklist for your sea bag is always useful. You heard that right: instead of a suitcase, you bring a bag on deck that you can easily store in your berth. Let’s start with clothing. You don’t need to bring a life jacket or bedding. However, a pair of sailing gloves comes in handy on deck. Since you’ll be spending most of the time in swimwear, a small set of underwear is enough. In any case, pack sturdy sneakers with a light-colored sole. Also include sandals or flip-flops, water shoes, or boat shoes to protect you from sea urchins. A few (warm) socks, T-shirts, and long, thin tops are also part of the list. A warm pullover, such as a sailor’s sweater, jeans, or a tracksuit for the evenings, can’t hurt either. Additionally, your travel packing list should include a thin windbreaker/sailing jacket/rain jacket, a windproof hat/cap, sunglasses with a strap, and a few beach towels.

And now, let’s continue with your packing list for the student sailing trip: First up, toiletries. You’ll need something against sunburn – sunscreen (at least SPF 30), lip balm with SPF, and after-sun lotion. For shower gel, shampoo, soap, etc., make sure to choose products without microplastics, since our wastewater goes directly into the sea. What else? A small toiletry bag with everything else you need, a travel first-aid kit (tablets for diarrhea, flu, motion sickness, bandages, and disinfectant), and of course your travel documents (passport, copy of passport, plane ticket, international health insurance, and if applicable, sailing or driving licenses), as well as your debit and credit cards. Very important: don’t forget a power bank and your music!

Fun factor of the flotilla

Flotilla sailing – that is, sailing together in a group – is part of the student sailing experience just as much as the best party destinations. With enough participants, you’ll sail with several yachts and many students together in the Mediterranean. Naturally, this brings more action and fun compared to a trip with just one yacht. Together, we anchor in small bays for swimming and relaxation: play water polo, snorkel, or float on an air mattress – it’s twice as fun with a great crew. Some even use the stunning scenery to combine sailing with yoga, which fits perfectly! Why? Not only does sailing on a yacht let you unwind and escape everyday life, but in combination with yoga, it’s ideal for finding inner calm on deck or on the beach.
